New Brunswick's housing stock makes this choice different than it looks in national buying guides. A large share of homes here were built with electric baseboard heat and have no ductwork at all, and many rural homes heat with oil furnaces whose ducts were sized for hot air, not heat pump airflow. Which system fits depends less on preference and more on what your house already is.

Ductless mini-splits

A ductless system pairs an outdoor unit with one or more indoor heads mounted on walls. Because no ductwork is needed, installation in a baseboard-heated home is straightforward and usually a single day per zone. This is why mini-splits are the default retrofit across the province.

Their strengths in a New Brunswick winter are real: cold-climate models deliver efficient heat deep below minus 20 C, each head is its own zone, and the baseboards you already own remain as automatic backup for the rooms the heads do not reach. The weaknesses are spatial. A head heats the open area it can see. Closed bedroom doors, L-shaped layouts, and finished basements create cool corners, and a single-head installation is a partial solution by design, typically covering the main living space while backup heats the rest. Whole-home ductless coverage takes multiple heads and approaches ducted cost.

Winter care matters more here than in most of the country. Outdoor units should be mounted above the local snow line on a stand or bracket, kept clear of drifting and roof shed, and given drainage room for defrost water, which otherwise becomes an ice pad under the unit. Expect visible steam and occasional gurgling during defrost cycles in freezing rain and heavy snow; that is normal operation, not a fault.

Central ducted heat pumps

A ducted system distributes heat through the whole house from one air handler, either through existing ducts or new ones. Comfort is its argument: every room gets conditioned air, there are no coverage gaps, and one thermostat runs the house. For homes that already have ducts, especially oil furnace conversions, a central cold-climate heat pump lets the whole distribution system carry the new heat source, often with electric backup elements in the air handler for the coldest hours.

The cautions are cost and ducts. Installing new ductwork in a finished home is disruptive and expensive, which is why duct-less retrofits dominate here. Existing ducts need checking: heat pumps move more air at lower temperature than oil furnaces did, so undersized or leaky ducts blunt the system, and ducts running through unheated attics or crawl spaces lose heat exactly when it is scarcest. A duct evaluation belongs in any central heat pump quote.

How to decide

If your home has baseboards and no ducts, ductless is almost always the answer, and the real decision is how many zones to install now versus later. If your home has healthy ducts from a furnace, a central cold-climate heat pump preserves whole-home comfort and is worth pricing first. If you are between the two, a common New Brunswick pattern is a hybrid: a ductless head or two carrying the main living space, existing heat covering the rest, added zone by zone as budget allows.
