Heat Pump Sizing for New Brunswick Homes

How heat pump sizing works for New Brunswick homes: heating loads, cold-climate ratings, single-zone vs multi-zone, backup heat, and the questions to ask an installer.

Sizing is the single decision that most determines whether a heat pump keeps a New Brunswick home comfortable in February. A correctly sized unit runs long, steady cycles, holds temperature through a cold snap, and keeps its efficiency. An oversized unit short-cycles and dehumidifies poorly in summer. An undersized unit leans on electric backup exactly when electricity is most expensive to make, which is how heat pump owners end up with the March power bill that surprises them.

Start from the heating load, not the square footage

Rules of thumb like "one ton per thousand square feet" come from cooling-dominated climates. In New Brunswick the heating load governs, and it depends on insulation levels, air tightness, window area, and basement construction at least as much as floor area. Two 1,500 square foot homes in the same town can need very different equipment. The right starting point is a room-by-room heat loss calculation. In Canada the reference method is CSA F280, and Natural Resources Canada publishes a free sizing and selection toolkit for cold-climate air source heat pumps that installers can use (heatpump-tool-outil-thermopompe.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca). An installer who measures, asks about insulation, and talks about heat loss before quoting is doing it properly. An installer who quotes a size from the driveway is guessing.

Design temperature and the cold-climate question

Equipment is chosen against a design temperature, roughly the coldest conditions a location sees in a normal winter. New Brunswick design temperatures are cold everywhere and colder inland and north: the Fundy coast is the mild end, while the upper Saint John River valley and the north see the deepest design conditions in the province. Two consequences follow.

First, only cold-climate rated equipment (often labelled ccASHP) belongs as a primary heat source here. Standard heat pumps lose capacity quickly below about minus 10 C. Cold-climate models are engineered to retain a large share of their rated capacity at minus 15 C and to keep producing useful heat at minus 25 C and below, though every model's capacity curve is different. Ask for the capacity table at minus 15 C and minus 25 C, not just the nameplate rating, which is measured at 8.3 C and says little about a New Brunswick January.

Second, decide deliberately what happens below the balance point, the outdoor temperature where the heat pump alone can no longer carry the whole load. Options are electric backup built into a central system, existing baseboards left in place, or sizing the heat pump to carry the full design load. Carrying the full load costs more upfront and risks oversizing for the other ten months; a modest balance point with baseboard backup is often the economical choice in retrofits. There is no single right answer, but there should be an explicit answer in the quote.

Single-zone, multi-zone, and the baseboard retrofit

A large share of New Brunswick homes heat with electric baseboards and have no ducts, which is why ductless mini-splits dominate the market here. Sizing a ductless system is zone-by-zone, not whole-house: a single well-placed head is sized to the open living area it actually serves, and the baseboards remain backup for bedrooms and far rooms. Treating one 12,000 BTU head as if it heats a whole two-storey house is the most common sizing mistake in the province. Multi-zone systems raise a different caution: multi-head outdoor units often have a higher minimum output, so pairing a big outdoor unit with several small bedroom heads can cause the same short-cycling problem as oversizing. Sometimes two smaller single-zone systems beat one large multi-zone.

What to ask an installer

Ask how they calculated the load and whether it was room by room. Ask for the model's published capacity at minus 15 C and minus 25 C. Ask where the balance point lands and what supplies heat below it. Ask why the proposed size, one size smaller, and one size larger were or were not chosen.
